Get yourself ready for the special night.

Every date night comes with its set of rites and rituals, some universal, others more personalized, but all in the aim of scoring the perfect evening, one that could even perhaps lead to “hands on thighs” — if you’re lucky. Just ask Locke, whose “Rendezvous” debuted last month on AFROPUNK. The L.A. singer says it’s all in the details.

“I love the ritual of a date. I’m a bit of a romantic, so I thoroughly enjoy savoring each moment. I like to start by putting on some music while getting ready.”

“I tend to put my phone on the charger as soon as I cue up the first song, or put on the first vinyl record, to ensure I have enough charge for the night. Then I proceed to shower and groom (shave, clip nails, brush teeth, etc.).”

“Be sure to moisturize to keep your skin hydrated and soft. And don’t forget the mouthwash after you floss! Cologne should be the final touch before getting dressed. Spray once (2 maximum) into the air in front of you at about chest level and walk through it. It is imperative to not go overboard with the cologne, less is more. No one wants to be near someone who smells like they took a damn bath in their cologne.”

“I like something with a view and/or great ambiance with natural or low lighting – no fluorescents! They key for me is choosing a place where I can keep the conversation (and libations if I choose) flowing.”

“Everyone has a different personal style, so I always encourage one to wear something that makes them feel comfortable and confident. No need to show up overly dressy, but shorts and flip flops are NEVER acceptable. Build an outfit around what makes you feel sexy. If you look great in hats, or maybe you have a pair of jeans that make you feel like a badass, use that as your starting point. Personally, I love the way boots can elevate an outfit, so they are a staple for me. I like to go neutral for my shirt and pants and embellish with jewelry, perhaps a simple ring or a statement necklace. As a Texas boy who grew up in warm weather, I get cold easily so I tend to top it off with a leather jacket. As an added bonus you have plenty of extra storage for mints, lip balm, keys, etc. so you don’t have to keep them in your pants pockets thus ruining the lining of your outfit.”

“If the vibe is right, I definitely believe in kissing on the first date. After all, you want to ‘try it before you buy it.’ Conversely, if the chemistry is not there, I do not believe in a pity kiss — no need to set the wrong expectation.

If I’ve had a good experience, I’ll send a brief text thanking my date for a good time.”

“Absolutely NO “Good Morning” texts after a first date, I hate that. There is no need for excessive post-date texting. Keep it brief and cute and trust that there will be another date if the connection was strong enough. Another thing to remember: If you don’t feel a connection, order the Lyft from the bathroom about 5 minutes before saying goodbye to ensure a seamless exit.  Be safe and have fun out there!”
